ME& a christening

Well today was the weirdest christening that I have ever been to. G’s sister recently born little girl called Ruby was christened today and I was asked to be godfather. This is my second god parent role.

Anyway the christening could have been something written for a carry on film. Firstly the event was supposed to start at 12.30pm. The small church was packed by 12.15pm with assorted family and friends but no vicar was a no-show. Cue various people trying to call anyone to find out where he was. It turns out the vicar didn’t stay in the vicarage and was driving in. 20min later he turned up claiming he’d been stuck in traffic. Then he couldn’t find the key to get into the vestry and get changed. This lead to more frantic phone calls by the vicar then 15mins later some woman turned up with the key.

The vicar had a very strong Nigerian accent as well so when he kept saying Ruby’s name it actually sounded like Robby, this wasn’t helped by the fact that he referred to the baby as a he twice – resulting in G’s mum doing fairly loud stage whispers to us on the front pew to remind the vicar Ruby was a girl. He then went into a slightly anti Muslim rant when talking about the god parents responsibilities. Telling us that if Ruby decides she wants to be a Muslim when she’s older, then we have to bring her back into the light of god – he obviously didn’t know my chequered past and aversion to being in the glare of god’s spotlight.

Unlike Ruby who giggled all through the service I had to stifle laughter – still it did lead to one memorable christening.

ME& my birthday regret

Well after feeling kind of flat all day during my b’day the day ended on a drunken high – literally.

I worked my b’day and actually had a fairly fun day at work. I splurged out and bought enough Krispy Kreme doughnuts for the whole office (35 people). My close work colleagues got me a bottle of bubbly and a t-shirt for my kitten. In the evening I met with G and couple of my gay friends in the Box.

After realising that 37 is such a non birthday I came to the conclusion that once you hit 30 you should only be allowed to celebrate your birthday every five years (35, 40, 45 & 50). This way you only celebrate the key milestones and miss out the awful ones in between where you just worry about hitting the milestones.

Anyway by now I had been mixing my drinks, bubbly, beer, gin & vodka I was starting to get a little tipsy. One friend offered my some Bolivian marching powder, which despite a slight hesitation I decided to take. To hell with getting old, I thought, I can still party like its 1999.

It had been a while since I’ve done this and it hit me like a train, I suddenly felt awake, upbeat and a lot more sober. One led to another and another – until finally I was over being 37 and was looking forward to being 38. Key to getting over it is to hang about with people older than you.

G dragged my home at around 10pm, but I was so wired that I ended up catching up on three episodes of Big Brother. The depression in the BB house finally brought me down then I climbed into be around 1pm. Who say’s I don’t know how to live (joke).

ME& another year

Well this week I officially become one year older and one year nearer 40. On Wednesday I’ll turn 37, how depressing. I’m not celebrating it, there’s not much to celebrate plus its midweek.

What’s strange is that I look at my girlfriends who are of a similar age and they are all married and have kids and there whole lives revolve around them. Where as I’m nearly 40 and am practically (minus the mortgage and husband) foot loose and fancy free.

If I fancy going out at the weekend and getting boozed and drugged up then clubbing all night I could. Do I? No I don’t, the problem is I lived my life to the full in that vain during my late teens and all of my 20’s and now I’m just too tired to do it, plus it doesn’t have the same appeal as it did back in the day. A good night’s sleep is far more appealing.

Still I do need to make an effort to cut loose again at some point just to remind myself that I’m not tied down by family and can live like peter pan despite my body growing older and wider.

ME& this weeks tube strike

Well I’ve been forced to be an even earlier bird this week thanks to the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Tube Union boss Bob Crow. The tube strike meant I have been getting up just before 5am to make it into work for 7am. Still at least I’ve finished work early this week but it’s still taken 2hours to do my 40min journey home.

It was however to nice to see that Boris pulled out all the stops to make sure there capital was ready for the extra strain by making part of Trafalgar Square a bicycle park – I noticed when I passed it at about 4pm on both Wednesday and Thursday that there were only four bikes parked. Obviously space well utilised and money well spent on hiring security to guard them!

The one good thing I took from it was the fact that I never go on buses so having to rely on them made me see how beautiful London is, how old and decorative some of the buildings in the city truly are – something you miss while travelling on the rat infested sewer trains know as the tube.

I also started training for my half marathon this week and realised how unfit I’ve become having not graced a gym with my presence in about three months. I did manage to run two mile in about 25mins but I was knackered afterward and covered in sweat. I have a funny feeling I may be fast walking the marathon in Sept.

ME& a quick catch up

Oh my god I can’t believe that I haven’t posted anything since April and that my last post was slightly depressing. Work has been mad, and just got worse in the run up to the local elections. No we have a new Cabinet minister heading our department its likely to stay busy and in the media spotlight.

In a turn of event G got offered his old job back, which he took as there was nothing about offering him the same salary and he was applying for jobs that paid £6k less. It’s worked out ok for us as we’ve managed to save some of his redundancy, plus it’s a case of better the devil you know. My mood has totally lifted and I feel like a weight has been lifted financially.

So what else have I been up to well since my last post I’ve seen Pricilla Queen of the Desert the musical – which I’d highly rate. Jason Donovan stared and the stage show is true to the movie apart from replacing all the ABBA references with Kylie ones. I’d highly recommend this show as everything about it including the three angels singing is great.

We also took G’s mum and dad to see Sister Act the musical – this wasn’t as good. It’s been reset in the 70’s and has a blacksplotation feel to it. The staging is great and the lead singer’s voice is great but there is not one recognisable song from the film in the stage show.

I’ve also been to see P!nk on tour which was great – I love P!nk so I am slightly bias, she sang live and done all sorts of acrobatics. My personal favourite was her version of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The only thing was that G & I were like the only guys at the concert (not including the roadies, lighting and sound guys), it was lesbian city. P!nk had all those ladies eating out her hand and no doubt they all went home to munch on the carpet while dreaming of P!nk afterwards.

We also went to see Britney’s Circus tour – this was ok, I’d read the reviews and new she mimes the whole thing but she’s been on my list of artists to see as she gives a good show. To be honest the staging was great, the dancers were great and the New York circus and Ciara who were on before her were great. Britney however seemed half hearted when it came to the dance routines and seemed to spend most of the time walking about the stage, flicking her blond extensions while being squeezed into some horrible DSquared sequined stripper outfits. The only song she sang live, Everytime – she only managed the first verse and chorus. I just felt Britney could have given more she really didn’t look like she was in the zone.

As I mentioned work has been full on but we did however have a great team building day. We were split into two teams and given an Apprentice style treasure hunt across London. I was appointed team leader of one of the teams and thankfully my team romped to pole position. It was really good as after the treasure hunt we went back and our head of news had set up an Alan Sugar style board room and put us all through our paces.

So as you can see I’ve been busy which has been good as I’ve not had time to further my depression, in fact keeping busy has lifted my mood. I’m trying not to think about my impending birthday and getting another year closer to 40. Despite my impending old age I've also signed up to do a half marathon with a couple of girls I work with. It's not until the 27 Sept, but I signed up to it three weeks ago and haven't been to the gym once yet. I really need to start getting my fitness level back up or I'm not going to make the grade.
